Installing SATA Hard Drive with Windows XP (Without Floppy Drive)

As we know, Microsoft stopped Windows XP selling product to new computer purchasing in order to overcoming Windows Vista. On recent days, new computers or notebooks product which has the requirement hardware are now capable to use it. It will run, but slow (a very to me). To make it double faster running OS, try to using Windows XP.

One problem found that lots of newest computers or notebooks are equipped with a SATA interface hard drive that not all recognized by Windows XP installer. It would ask the SATA driver for the hardware and you must provide it before continue to installing the rest processes.

For example, a week ago I’ve purchased an Acer Travelmate 6291-100508. This sub-notebook are comes with Intel Core 2 Duo 1,66 GHz processor, 80 GB SATA hard drive, 512 MB DDRAM, DVD RAM Super Multi, 12.1” WXGA screen & LinPus Linux pre-installed OS. From the selling box, Acer recommended to use Windows Vista hence there are no Windows XP driver CD software included. In manner way, there will no chance to installing it with Windows XP since the installer didn’t recognized the SATA interface. One for sure, Acer website provides all of the Windows XP drivers software, including the SATA driver to support the Windows XP installation. So, how to integrating the bootable installer with the SATA driver software, since I’m not too interesting to buy a USB floppy drive?

First of all, get the SATA driver manufactured from your hardware factory website (Acer link) & download nLite to create a custom Windows XP installer (note that you need .NET Framework 2.0 available from Microsoft download site before running the nLite). Next, from nLite application, browse to the Windows XP CD installer (I’m not responsible to any legally use of Windows XP installer) & let it cached to a specified path:

Then, press Drivers & Bootable ISO button to inserting the SATA drivers & continue to create an ISO image to burn in a CD:

Clicking on Next button, you will be prompted to inserting from the source disk of SATA drivers software:

Insert the source disk contain SATA driver files:

Finally, confirmed with YES button to continue to burning the ISO image:

After it finished, let it try to boot from this bootable CD next to your computer or notebook.

As we know, lots of brand new laptops package are shipped with Vista drivers support without any XP driver software included - such as WiFi, VGA drivers, ethernet or else. FYI, i had comments on a forum about how to enabled it so that all hardware become recognized & run optimally with XP. Check this out too...

I have an Acer Aspire 5680, I just wanted to say I'm dealing with the same problem. I want to go from Vista to Windows XP or do a dual boot. I tried to boot it using gLite, but I had no success with the boot. I'm not sure if I did something wrong....I copied both the WinXp disc and sp2 into seperate files. Then at the beginning of gLite I clicked to the main location (WinXP cd) and integrated sp2 into it. Did I do something wrong? Well thank you for you're site, I've been reading many sites. Also I'm making a list of drivers on another cd I just wanted to make a strictly integrated clean sp2 into a WinXP. When I used Paul Thurott's instructions, all I got was a cd that just kept booting, it never did anything, just a blank screen. Then I used glite and well when I booted it from the F12 bootable cd it completely ignored it and booted into the usual Vista Operating system. I did ISO it, is there some specific method, Thurgott's site did mention an image file which I did get using another downloaded program. All that came up was a constantly booting black black screen that didn't do anything. Originally I did try to boot with with the Windows XP cd, the orginal one, but I got a pci.sys error or psi.sys, something like that. I was just wondering should I restore to factory settings and follow this method
    http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

I'm really annoyed, yes I did try Virtual Machine, sadly it's not very good if you're a gamer like I am. I love these blog sites, I think I may get one, which site do I chose? hehe.

I did iso the whole XP folder after I integrated the sp2 folder into the XP folder then burnt it as a iso 530 something MB's right?. I didn't include the ATA driver. I'm working on downloading all the drivers, I have about 6 of them for my system. Yes I did copy each CD into seperate folders to be clear. Are you sure Vista likes to boot with a Windows XP cd? I've had no luck.? Is there something in bios I should be doing? I was thinking of backing up any stuff I've left on Vista, using Acer's "restore to factory settings" oh and Acer didn't give me the Vista CD so I'm really annoyed. I just can't seem to get XP working outside of the Virtual Machine world. I've had no luck, I did hear about disabling the ata drive in bios, I'm a bit scared of messing something up. This was a bad move with Microsoft, there are times when you need to release Operating Systems and then there are times when they really don't need to release one. I did use restore to factory settings once and I did see Windows XP load under it, sadly Vista has locked it down. I was just wondering if I could do a dual boot with using http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp just before I have to type in the Vista key that unleashed "The Thing". The only reason why I don't want to get rid of Vista is because they threw in Norton Anti-Virus and if Windows XP uses the same filing system then I wouldn't have to install anything on Windows XP later on and well, I guess I want Vista to be the main operating System but I want to be able to use XP for gaming I think basically mostly. It's hard to know how Acer's bloatware will react to trying to install Windows XP beforehand and then hoping it will run properly without making the whole thing inoperable kinda thing. Any input would help. Thanks. Are the people on drugs that say you can boot XP in a Vista Machine?? I mean I've tried it over and over again, I have had zero luck. The only thing that popped in my head was to back up the stuff in Vista, use system restore then use the dual boot instructions. He said to hit the reset button after you've partitioned the drive, well I just hope it loads Windows XP's boot cd or I've wasted all that time for nothing, but that's the more serious way I think of trying to install XP so far. Yeah XP does sit under Vista, when I used system restore that one time I did see the Windows XP logo load up. I just wish I could remove the crap on top of it, I guess Microsoft is determined to save face, they just won't let you take off the top layer. At least let us use the "use previous versions" in the F6 boot command. This is getting sad, I'm getting very depressed, actually Vista has really put me into a bit a depression, yes a gamer depression, depressed knowing the stable Operating System that sits underneath this thing, well any help would be great. Sorry for the speech, looks like others are in "Vista Hell" too. I'm starting to wonder if I should just wait for the SP1 and hope "HOPE" they make it gamer worthy, but it's looking quite sad at the moment, Take Care....

Can I slipstream only the driver
and boot from the CD without having
    to install XP?

Or I can do this slipstream way
only when I install a fresh XP after
    I formated the HDD?

Because I have the same problem,
and at the moment my HDD is running
    at IDE emulation mode.

    Thanks for the info.

This seems very nice. Tried it once for my HP 6510b but did not get it to work.
When I boot from the CD I made it enters the installation process but prompts for me
to put the Win XP SP2 installation in A: drive. Anyone encountered this? Where did I go wrong? If I try to verify the CD on a working computer in Windows (my old laptop) it says: Go to controlpanel to install and configure system components. That comes up instead of the regular XP CD install options. I dwnloaded the SATA AHCI drives for 6510b from HPs homepage.

    Thankful for any help.

I thought that your SATA driver is not correct to your current system. Please contact to your laptop provider to asking the correct one driver. This problem is always happened when the SATA driver is not acceptable to the specified hardware.

    Help Pak Eko dan semuanya,

Di Acer Travelmate 6291. Saya download driver XP
Sehabis install XP, saya install chipset Intel, VGA, Modem, LAN, TouchPad, WebCam

Tetapi modem tidak berhasil dideteksi. Progress Bar sampai 80% lalu berhenti

    Thanx

@Anonymous: Pengalaman saya dulu sepertinya hampir sama. Progress instalasi modem bergerak lambat (nyaris saya simpulkan seperti hang), tetapi pasti hingga 100%.

    Makasih Pak Eko sebelumnya,

    Saya takut memang modemnya masalah.

Silakan menikmati...

    Makasih pak Eko atas sarannya,

Saya tes dulu setelah berhasil download driver sound.

    Apa memang begitu ?

    Makasih banyak atas jawabannya.

    Hello Eko,

thank you for your precious direction. I really think that it is very helpful.

Having read your direction, however, I was only able to install Windows XP Pro SP2 in my Acer Extensa 5220 laptop nearly perfect.

This is because up till now the Sound Audio is not yet activated. I have downloaded the driver from the official Acer website and have installed it, but it didn't work. And moreover, I downloaded the newer version of the same driver (Intel High Definition) from Realtek website but it did not work either.

And some said that I should also install the hotfix KB888111 before installing the Realtek driver. I have tried, but again it did not give any positive result.

I would be very very thankful if you could give me others advice or suggestions in order to activate my Audio sound. (*almost desperate*)

P.S.: If you think that I have downloaded the wrong drivers, could you please provide me with a particular links to download the correct ones?

    -Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)
    -Intel (R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI ICH7M/DH

    Hello
I made the bootable disk with Nlite,
But I have another problem on the Acer 6592G
The boot time is too long the performance is low for such a powerful machine,
    When I switch the laptop
It takes 20-30 seconds before the Acer logo appears on screen.
How can I solve this problem?

    Thank you

Masalah yang sama juga aku alami,
Untuk audio sepertinya kedetect, cuman pas aku pake muter windows media player muncul pesan error klo sound device nya belom terinstall.

& working well.

Hi , I have same problem whit FS Amilo Pi 1505. I'm having problems with windows xp on a laptop with preinstalled vista that has no floppy drive, the error "It doesn't detect the SATA HDD"; I tried the solution with a usb floppy drive and pressing f6, I found the correct driver(intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M)) and it works fine, I`m able to partition the HD and the process continues until it asks for the driver again but the USB floppy drive doesn't wortk in that part of the installation.

After that I try whit your way.I make bootable cd with nlite . When I boot from the CD I made it enters the installation process but prompts for me to put the Win XP SP2 installation in A: drive.

in BIOS don’t have way to change sata mode to “ide”. I can use only achi mode.

can you help me . Thanks

@ me, bLue, seven: XP Black Edition? Pasti berat deh kayaknya, soalnya kan macem2 program + driver udah built-in di DVD-nya.

@ roni: Menurut saya, Travelmate 6291 is the most valuable international branded laptop untuk spek core 2 duo+display 12"+dvd rw+bluetooth+card reader+firewire.

Oke?

  106. Blogger Eko Wahyudiharto said,

    Wednesday, October 24, 2007 2:22:00 PM

    Terima kasih atas kunjungannya...

How to install xp with a sata hard drive
    **********************************************************************
After spending hours trawling the internet for a solution we figured out what to do in a flash of inspiration!!!

    Try the following steps:

    1. open your bios
    2. look for "SATA Contraol Mode" or something similar
    3. there should be an option that allows you to change the SATA mode to IDE or RAID or ASCHI or something similar
    4. SELECT "IDE" MODE
    5. Now you should be able to boot the Win XP CD

this will run slower compared to sata mode but once you have installed service pack 2 you can change this back to sata mode through the bios

    good luck!!!

    Hi Eko,
I have a HP DV 6221TX pAVILION Lap top. I am trying to set it up as a duel boot with VISTA and XPPRO
I have partisioned the hard drive and installed xp pro on the partision by making a bootable cd as per your instructions.
The problem that I have now is that, I cannot restore the boot for Vista as the HP dvd does'nt have an option to do a start up repair, which would normally repair the startup boot loader (http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp#restoring) I have contacted HP and they confirmed that to do a startup repair then I would have to buy a new copy of VISTA as the OEM VIST that came with the computer will only reformat the hardrive to the original factory set up deleting my ne XP partision.
If you have any ideas on how to do a start up repair, which would normally repair the startup boot loader I would really could use your help on this. As I cannot run my design software on VISTA

    Kind regards

HOLLY $H1T man! I cannot believe how it worked! I've been working on this at least 5 hours and you deal worked perfect.

Whomever out there has a HP DV6000 if you are getting a message of needing a floppy for "intel matrix storage manager driver" during setup after using the right SATA drivers this is the way to create a setup CD to put XP on those laptops. Just follow his instructions and get those damn driver on to a CD it works perfect.

    Freaky. You the MAN!

    Thanks for sharing this software!

Do you swear you have the right SATA drivers for your chipset?

Do you swear you have a working floppy drive but still can't get the damn XP setup go forward right after the formating the hard drive?

You get stuck on a message please insert "Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver Floppy"?

Your BIOS doesn't support "SATA native mode"

YOU SHOULD TRY THIS DUDE'S SOFTWARE. IT WORKED PERFECT FOR ME!

I really thought it wouldn't but it sure did. When it worked so beatifully I thought I won the freaken lottery...

Thanks for a great little software!!!

A much simpler way for the acer travlemate 6292 is to switch in the bios settings (F2 during boot) into IDE mode. The XP SP2 installer then recognizes teh sata drive without problems.

@Anonymous: Pengalaman saya dulu sepertinya hampir sama. Progress instalasi sound bergerak lambat seperti modem (nyaris saya simpulkan seperti hang), tetapi pasti hingga 100%.

THE ONLY NOTEBOOK YOUR PAGE SAYS CAN'T BE DOWNGRADED TO XP IS THE FUJITSU A6025. AS A TECH, I COULD NOT FIND ANYONE ONLINE HAVING DONE SO SUCCESSFULLY, SO I WANT TO FULLFILL MY OBLIGATION TO SHARE THE METHOD NECESSARY TO INSTALL XP ON THE A6025. THIS TOOK ME THREE FULL DAYS, SO MAY THE FORCE LEAD YOU HERE QUICKLY. WHILE THE CHIPSET AND SATA CONTROLLERS ARE BOTH INTEL, THE APPROPRIATE INTEL DRIVER DOES NOT WORK, AS INTEL INDICATES IN THE FINEPRINT. BUT, NO SOLUTION IS OFFERED. THE SATA DRIVER YOU NEED IS FROM THE FUJITSU E8110. ALL OTHER DRIVERS ARE THOSE FOR THE A6030, WHICH ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FOR XP AT AN ALTERNATE COUNTRY'S SUPPORT SITE. Use the "Storage Drive-Intel for Vista" driver within the XP install. I had the same problem you did with a Acer laptop and used the Vista driver to get XP to recognize the SATA hard drive on a fresh install.

BTW for Aspire 5720 users wondering where to find your SATA drivers, they are closer than you might think:
    C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Driver.
In the 5720G (my laptop) is an Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (ICH8M)

Here's a guide using driverpacks and CDIMAGE GUI. You don't need a floppy for this and basically it installs all sata drivers for all known manufacturers. Works like a charm :)

This is a good resource. Another, perhaps easier way is to do this:

1: In BIOS, switch to IDE mode instead of AHCI (SATA).

    2: Install XP normally.

3: Get the correct drivers to support AHCI for your mobo from your manufacturer's web site. You may have to go to the Asian or European sites to get them. (For example, I had to get my Acer drivers from ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/)

4: Install the AHCI driver while in your Windows environment.

5: Reboot, go back into BIOS, and re-enable AHCI, which will now recognized your SATA drive because it has the proper driver.

    6: PROFIT!!!!!!!
