Again, Connecting to YM!

For everyone who has connection troubles with Yahoo Messenger (YM) especially blocked link by the network administrator, there are several solutions to be done. This problem & answer are comes out based on my own experiences about how to connecting to the YM blocked port in a large configured company LAN. Each solutions referring a succeeded connection, give a try before rolling to the next stage.
  1. As you might know, the YM installer are comes with online process which resulting an error in a downloading setup data. This error appeared as a part of a forbidden network. Try to download the YM offline installer from Yahoo download pages & have a try to run it. After installation, make a connection preferences set to no proxy & give a right account to log in.
  2. If you have failed in step #1, take off the network cables & continued to connect the internet from dial up process. Do this stage for only once. After you succeeded to log on, remove the dial up & plug in the network cables. You might also try this step from YM online installer too.
  3. Again, if you have a no connection result after tried solution #2, have a try with Windows Live Messenger (WLM). This new messenger application from Microsoft are comes with it's new feature and able to communicate to the YM (via http?) port. First, download the WLM from Microsoft download page & get the account from .NET Passport. Just follow the wizard to make it done. After succeeded logged in from WLM, make a test connection with your YM friend account. This yet last solution are more practical & successful on me. Good luck!

XChat: My Spare (Time) Chat-tainment

What would you do if you:
-> Stay on a office
-> Having a spare time
-> 24/7 internet connection
-> Closed a.k.a blocked chat port (no mIRC, no Yahoo Messenger ~ YM)

I'll doing a chat task using XChat or Google talk! Since mIRC under Windows are blocked on my line, so I had a researched to test it under my web server box based on Fedora Core 4. The weird things was it did with XChat. It seems that it tricks & passed the chat port proxy machine. This is the interesting part of the application. Very weird, but it entertained me.

XChat is a mIRC likes. Once you used it up, there will be no problem to switch from mIRC. The interface are so simple, even more with the IRC standard command line. It is so easy to whois your partner by right-clicking the mouse over the nick's. XChat also equipped with URL grabber which make you easy to find out the domain are connected recently.

When you are ready to logged in with XChat, perhaps you can follow my tips & trick below:
-> For fastest connection, find a nearest local server to reach local channels. Currently, I am using server irc.cbn.net.id:6667 to retrieve my favorite channels at #jakarta, #bandung, #surabaya & #yogyakarta. This local IRC server are not exist on default server list. You have to add it by your self.
-> For more extra-power, download the plug-in scripts to customized your XChat. There are tons of address you can use the script as you want to add. Don't be shy to make a googling. For example; I using rainbow (/rb) text plug-in to colorized my message on XChat and also a nick name or domain searching perl plug-in script.

Go Open Source (part I)

After obstructed by several reasons, finally the task to migrating the servers into open source operating system in the company I've been worked has begin. At the first step, we are planning to moved in the mail server using Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and I was having chance to do this.

By time, the new pure server machine has arrived and ready to replace the old one. So, we are totally create the mail server from the scratch with a new box. It came with 3GHz Intel dual xeon processor, RAM 2GB, 800GB of SATA storage which separate into 2 plates and very noisy blowers at the back panel.

On this machine, I'm planning about to create a mirror storage scheme using RAID-1 technology. So that the email data's will be more enough safe. The installation of 6 CD's RHEL are quite fast with complete install option. It takes nearly 1GB of storages. Therefore, several Linux distribution are known failed since there were problems between setup session, likes Fedora Core 4 seems to be crash and displaying a kernel panic log messages, the Xandros & CentOS Linux displaying a blank black on the monitor, the IGOS Nusantara (IGN) 2006 failed to create RAID-1 and so on and so on.

Anyway, for this RAID-1 machine, I configured out the partition tables just right the picture below:

The first partition are split into 3 system partition, such as: 80GB as the system (/), 300GB dedicated for the email storage (/opt) and 1.5GB as the swap partition. While the second partition are fully mirror from the email storage mounted on /dev/md0.

This black thin noisy server are running without any daemons up. Next picture are figured out the "top" command results:

Meanwhile, we're currently holding about 1000 accounts & already using Merak Mail Server as the backend since it was licensed & bought for many years ago. It was a mistake indeed (but it wasn't me). Just like a TV commercials said "Tanya kenapa?"

Solo (day 2)

Officially, I was planned in Solo within 2 days. So, today might be my last day in the city and the technician must be on they way to set the VSAT dish in order to test the rest link with my own hands. But, the bad news has came. The technicians are more late since there were a train accident happened around the Cirebon and it make the schedules are completely out of my prediction.

However, it is not become my responsibility anymore since it late. I turn the test jobs to my team in Regional Office because I have to back to Jakarta for tomorrow and my boss had excused me in.

Anyway, tons of ideas I’ve got from discuss result between my team and me. My next strategy is to combined the idea to create an evolution to make more effectiveness and efficiency exclude from using of the VSAT technologies. Hopefully that I can make it soon.
