Nokia has a built-in integrated application for users to communicate with their social media account. It called Nokia Social App. By using this, you can upload picture taken directly from camera and share it into some social media services that you registered on it before. Couple months ago, I'd experiencing a weird problem when I tried to uploading picture to my facebook account using my Nokia E7. The Social app become useless since it only show loading screen for some seconds and then it suddenly quitting without any reasons.



No clue given about what's wrong with this. So, here below was my experiment on how to solve the problem (and it's a real evidence shows that Nokia Suite App is suck :)

1. Reinstall Social App
I tried connecting my E7 to Nokia Suite via USB cable.



And would like to get download and install Social Networking Client app from Nokia Store.



After reinstall process finished, opening Social app but it still stuck after loading window.

2. Fresh Install of Social App
Tried to delete Social app from the phone and looking for changes on Software updates from Nokia Suite. And voila, it said that there's apps available to update.



The good news was New Social app were ready to install.



Just need for couple minutes to download the New Social.



The installation had finished and the greeting messages gives a promising word that this cure will solve the problem.



Tried to open Social app but it still the same stuck after loading window.

3. Reinstall Phone Software
Still connected to Nokia Suite and choose Software update from menu bar. Since my E7 contains latest version, so there's no option to update except reinstall.



Reinstalling phone software require 398 MB packet size to download. The best things you can do from now is just...waiting.



After a quite phone reboot, it will show status saying that the phone is in "refreshed" mode.



Tried to look Social app, still hung after loading window.

4. Factory Mode
Last attempt, like all phone technician will do by using reset factory mode! Backup your phone first before doing this. Accessing factory mode from Menu :: Settings :: Phone :: Phone Management :: Factory Settings



Vice versa and it works!



Conclusion
So far, this problem wasn't in Social App package. The bad news: Nokia Suite couldn't resolve that. Something "mysteriously" linked between core phone software with the Social app. The factory reset will fixed it, but I suggest to Nokia engineer to fix Nokia Suite first before user like me can get mad because of this.

Do you know the difference between Nokia Ovi Suite vs Nokia PC Suite? Well, there's really no big difference between the two apart from the UI. Some said that Ovi Suite is actually PC Suite with a revised GUI and substantially reduced functionality and it crashes under Vista a lot more frequently as well. Some others also said that PC Suite was quite a crude and clumsy application that was counter intuitive and had a poor user interface, while Ovi Suite is different; it's much much worse and crashes so often until it's no longer become a useful application :)

Well, here's the time to proof that they thinks is right and it's absolutely right! A problem raised when I try to install Ovi Suite downloaded from official Nokia website (89.6MB) on WIndows XP computer. It's  said "Your computer needs a Windows certificate"



Nokia seems to have used a certificate to sign the code for the Ovi Suite that is too new to have matching authority certificates in XP (especially found on - at least - at SP2). Installing the matching certificates will fixes that. So it's a Nokia (Ovi Suite) problem - they should have used certificates that supported XP. But it is easily fixed.

There's a clue that you have to add certificate manually from given URL (https://knowledge.verisign.com/support/code-signing-support/index?page=content&id=AR1739). Anyway that Symantec/VeriSign page is also bad - it should have given the proper installation instructions, and preferably an explanation also.

Hereby, I'd like to explain step-by-step how to fix this problem until Ovi Suite installed as well. First, prepare an internet connection to make the certificate files. Point to URL that given by the Nokia Ovi Suite alert from the browser.



As it can see, that there's 2 certificates code that you need to paste into separate files. Give it both different name with extension ".cer" and save it to anywhere inside your computer.



Next, right click the first certificate and choose Install Certificate.



A Certificate Import Wizard will show. Click Next.



Continue to automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate. Click Next.



Click Finish.



There's a window message tell you that the import operation is successfully. Repeat the same way on last certificate file. As well, the Nokia Ovi Suite installer should have given you an option to proceed with the install without checking the signing :)



Anyway, now Nokia Ovi Suite is ready to use. There's no need to worried about the functionality it self since I believe that Nokia developer have a great decision why they made this application instead of Nokia PC Suite. Hope that this article help you to fix about certificate error during Nokia Ovi Suite installation. See ya around!

It's been a long time since I left my E7 - a great expensive gadget but sticked to old man named Symbian :). For some reason I switched to BlackBerry 9105 Pearl, a more handy smartphone and also 100% support for my business (BBM and Email). The E7 was the latest Nokia's communicator family with better build material and adopting slim unichrome body just like it's rival, the iPhone. PR 1.0
The first birth of E7 implant the 5th Symbian generation, called PR 1.0. It's quite attractive OS but lack with lag after using it several times. A periodically reboot was needed to refresh the E7 brain.



On the net at that time, Nokia fans stumbled about some rumors talking about the next generation of Nokia OS. The options was MeeGo, Android, Windows Mobile or still with... Symbian. Based on Wiki page, Symbian OS actually built from Qt. Considering to the equivalent of hardware specs, Qt more "light-weight" than Java (Android based OS). That's the reason why Nokia still stick with Symbian rather than Android based OS. And nor to Microsoft WP, CMIIW.

On August 2011, finally Symbian Anna released officially by Nokia and it available to download via OTA.



It took about 67MB to update from PR1.0 to Anna. Thank's to my office net for providing me the best and fast internet link (at that time). The update process finished about 20 minutes and the previous 3rd party application installed before was still run.

The GUI experiences accelerated on Anna. The performance overall increased about 15-20%.



A physically different between the previous OS and Anna was the icon trademark - a shape rounded.



Therefore, lots of improvements in it including the browser, touch-screen speed reaction and more features.



But still, users experiences never lie. Nokia got some wonderful hardware, and still Nokia freak like me will say that Symbian in fact was so slow on run, buggy, also poor on innovations (R&D).

However, it's Nokia evolution time to rise the future of Symbian. Pure Qt as described earlier is designed to Anna or later (not to prior of S^3). Nokia plans to migrate it's OS architecture slowly since they have hundreds phone models (limited to various hardwares). And this is not an easy job to aligned all of it. Just for example, as Nokia promising that the update of Anna will be available at the end of 2011, but the fact is not what it said.

Anyway, at last, Belle update officially released in February 2012. As it shown on Software Update screen, but sorry to say that this update ONLY available via the last version of Windows PC Suite (not OTA).



Seems Nokia still have great homework to provide a multiplatform PC Suite, since I must to close my Mac & switch back to Windows to download the software.



With this latest suite, the detection of patch-update will displayed on screen.



So reasonable that Nokia ordering the update through PC while the phone plugged-in since it takes about 358MB of total Belle update.



The procedure is still the same; downloading, backing-up, install & restoring.



But it needs couple of minutes longer because Belle OS is defined as a major upgrade.

Nokia E7 - the latest communicator device a.k.a Magn-E7 - is one of Symbian^3 mobile phone (still a big questionnaire if it's last Symbian generation from Nokia, but thank’s god – at least it support to be extending until 2016). In the middle of Nokia issues with Windows, MeeGo & Symbian, the E7 has born with perfect composition of hardware, software & price :). A luxury fast of 680MHz processor with "iPhone" touch screen sensation (capacitive screen type) & full QWERTY keyboard, it's a great device as rivals of Android & iPhone - sorry, for premium users I means.

As I still become a loyal Nokia user - from 2008 with Nokia N95 8GB for almost 4 years with no problem until I replace it straightly with E7. Though, I hadn't choosing any brands (iPhone or Android or BlackBerry or else freaks) since I was falling in love with the E7 style. Somehow, I still believe with Symbian performance - even people think that this OS seems out-of-date – anyone called this as zombie OS is moron. Well, all I can say that Symbian is a mature OS than any.

Anyway, Symbian^3 used in E7 looks more than impressively. Here below is my micro-review after I used it for 2 months. Each of it, I categorized in groups of - let say – the advantages:
1. Home Screen
The E7 home screen contains 3 desktops - it can show up to 72 applications shortcuts right there.



Pretty great if you have it all on it since it’ll cut your time off by running the application from menu button. Here what it look like in landscape mode:



As a multi-threading device, Nokia E7 has a better memory management that let the phone run with lots of application opened simultaneously.



Thank’s to Symbian^3 used on this phone as it optimally avoiding the performance to be slightly decreased mixed with the consideration of the processor speed & the battery life which I said... perfecto! To get the home screen, just press shortly the menu button. Pressing it in a few seconds will showing you a similar ALT+TAB just like PC did.

2. Keyboard Layout
The E7 comes with 4 type of keyboards layout. When it operate in landscape mode, a full of virtual qwerty will showing up on the screen.



Anyway, more than 70% in a day I used this phone is in portrait mode. The keyboard layout it self changed to standard view. While in Contact mode, a complete alphabets virtual key filling the screen, relating it to appropriate existing contact name automatically.



As physically it have slide-up qwerty keyboard, typing in E7 is more than fun, enjoyable & quite looks elegance.



3. Image Editors
E7 supplied with 8MPx EDoF slim camera device with double-bright flashlight behind it. However, each image created can consume about 900Kb of size. Unfortunately, it only allow up to 3 pictures when you want to send it over MMS – since greater pixels are equals to the file size.



To downsizing the pixels, E7 provide Resize function from built-in image editor. Not only that, you can also make it rotate, crop, adding text & any other effects to make the picture suitable for you.



As it simply fast touch & touch, forget about editing the image from PC! The Nokia engineers has providing it to E7.

4. Software Update
Updating OS version much easier with E7. As I did it once after I bought it & recently have an up-to-date version by my self. Try to do this with free internet connection from WiFi around you or your bill will blows up :)



5. Mini Touch Screen to Extra Large LCD
E7 also HDMI device ready, means you can connect it to LCD TV to scaling up the screen to a large-wider one. From the box, it also supplied with HDMI cable connector.



Anyway, you need to buy separated HDMI extension cable to connect the TV. In a while – if you don’t have it – try to use – if you have – N95 8GB TV out cable. It’s kinda RCA cable type but compatible to E7.



The E7 will now act like a HDTV player. Quite awesome if you need to show pictures or watching movie with family right on TV screen.



6. Maps
N95 8GB takes about 10mins to show current position on the Nokia Maps, while E7 only takes about 10secs.



It’s a great enhancing now offered by Ovi Maps since it provide lot of maps extension tools; for example below is weather widget.



7. Messaging
Nokia E7 comes with threaded messaging, means it’s like a chat conversation view.



A well organized view from there, since it only displaying messages per recipient name.



And it absolutely similar with BlackBerry messaging…



8. Premium Office
A premium (& expensive) business phone without office capability means…useless. That’s why E7 has built-in QuickOffice Premium with full-feature & functions. It has editor for document, spreadsheet & presentation which support even to .docx extension of Microsoft Office.



And that’s why I love to move my works on E7, just for editing document & managing my Excel spreadsheet. Including this blog article :)

9. USB PnP
Nokia E7 has a feature called USB on the Go. It makes any USB device more useful & highly compatible to the phone. Let say charging with USB cable connected to PC. Not only that, this phone also allowed you to transferring data from USB disk. Try that function from File Manager, provide an USB storage & the cable included from the box.



Then, plugged in the cable to the USB flash disk & connect it to USB connector on the phone.



Now, a new drive letter (F:) will show up from File Manager automatically.



The E7 has now become a micro-PC as you can move your files to support your works independently! Is there any phone that has the same capability apart from this gadget? Well, not only this. Try to plugged-in any USB keyboard & feel free to type from a larger keyboard! This is also works on USB numeric keypad…



Getting tired touching up the screen all day long while you browsing the Internet? Attach the USB mouse & you’ll have an active cursor on the screen.



Excellent!

10. Symbian Anna
In the upcoming months, there will be a Symbian^3 update (code name: Anna) available to E7. Though, it’ll have lots of improvements including refreshing up the screen & icons, fastest internet browser, enhancing the photo gallery, maps version & others Ovi suites as it claimed.



But first, let’s try Anna screen & icons. The preview just like picture above. Quite beautiful just like it’s name.

11. Virtual DOS
There are plenty of applications that support Symbian^3, but I’m too curious with DOSBox. It’s a virtualization of DOS that ported successfully on Symbian – beside others PC platform. The point is, so much articles from Internet tried to prove that it could run Windows OS from their Symbian based phone. Unfortunately, it’s not happened to me with E7.



Still, the issue I faced was the keymapper – which is too hard to configure - & crashed DOSBox when I loaded Windows. While I still try to tuning-up the configuration file to find a best suitable one, I’ll shared the story as soon as I succeed to make Windows 9x running on my Nokia E7. Hope me luck

12. Wind OS
As it state from the homepage, Wind OS is almost like the real Windows on your phone. The app will let you feel the Windows atmosphere: you will hear noise of the cooler and see the classic Windows desktop screen. With Wind OS you will also have a notepad for text editing, a browser for surfing and, of course, a Minesweeper for fun.



Pretty cool project out there. Someday – probably – we just wait until this application turned up into a real OS. Symbian replacement maybe? Ha ha ha

13. Programming
The term of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP) is popular to those web developers. As this LAMP was successfully ported to Symbian, the project it self known as PAMP (the first P with Personal) – but I prefer with P means Portable. In short, PAMP works with E7.



Once the service running, it broadcasted to the wireless network. Try to load the default localhost page within E7 browser:

Awesome! So, there’s no need to carrying netbook anymore to make a software presentation to your clients or editing the source code & testing it right a way if you’re programmer, as you only need to carry this phone to make them all stunned.

C O N C L U S I O N
Lots of side I’d skipped from this article; the E7 hardware, Ovi Integration, Multimedia, Internet Capability, etc which I believe that someone out there has a chance to share & reviewing it. But all I can say is, Symbian^3 that (finally decided to) filled-up in Nokia E7 are far away to be called as a dated OS. As my conclusion to this article, everything is just possible to improve - a real statement to leave behind the rivals. The company; Symbian, Nokia & other third party else had succeeded to bring into the world a finest communication gadget.
