Fixing Nokia Social App (3 Failed & 1 Works)

Nokia has a built-in integrated application for users to communicate with their social media account. It called Nokia Social App. By using this, you can upload picture taken directly from camera and share it into some social media services that you registered on it before. Couple months ago, I'd experiencing a weird problem when I tried to uploading picture to my facebook account using my Nokia E7. The Social app become useless since it only show loading screen for some seconds and then it suddenly quitting without any reasons.

No clue given about what's wrong with this. So, here below was my experiment on how to solve the problem (and it's a real evidence shows that Nokia Suite App is suck :)

1. Reinstall Social App
I tried connecting my E7 to Nokia Suite via USB cable.

And would like to get download and install Social Networking Client app from Nokia Store.

After reinstall process finished, opening Social app but it still stuck after loading window.

2. Fresh Install of Social App
Tried to delete Social app from the phone and looking for changes on Software updates from Nokia Suite. And voila, it said that there's apps available to update.

The good news was New Social app were ready to install.

Just need for couple minutes to download the New Social.

The installation had finished and the greeting messages gives a promising word that this cure will solve the problem.

Tried to open Social app but it still the same stuck after loading window.

3. Reinstall Phone Software
Still connected to Nokia Suite and choose Software update from menu bar. Since my E7 contains latest version, so there's no option to update except reinstall.

Reinstalling phone software require 398 MB packet size to download. The best things you can do from now is just...waiting.

After a quite phone reboot, it will show status saying that the phone is in "refreshed" mode.

Tried to look Social app, still hung after loading window.

4. Factory Mode
Last attempt, like all phone technician will do by using reset factory mode! Backup your phone first before doing this. Accessing factory mode from Menu :: Settings :: Phone :: Phone Management :: Factory Settings

Vice versa and it works!

Conclusion
So far, this problem wasn't in Social App package. The bad news: Nokia Suite couldn't resolve that. Something "mysteriously" linked between core phone software with the Social app. The factory reset will fixed it, but I suggest to Nokia engineer to fix Nokia Suite first before user like me can get mad because of this.

Solving Ovi Suite Certificate Error

Do you know the difference between Nokia Ovi Suite vs Nokia PC Suite? Well, there's really no big difference between the two apart from the UI. Some said that Ovi Suite is actually PC Suite with a revised GUI and substantially reduced functionality and it crashes under Vista a lot more frequently as well. Some others also said that PC Suite was quite a crude and clumsy application that was counter intuitive and had a poor user interface, while Ovi Suite is different; it's much much worse and crashes so often until it's no longer become a useful application :)

Well, here's the time to proof that they thinks is right and it's absolutely right! A problem raised when I try to install Ovi Suite downloaded from official Nokia website (89.6MB) on WIndows XP computer. It's  said "Your computer needs a Windows certificate"

Nokia seems to have used a certificate to sign the code for the Ovi Suite that is too new to have matching authority certificates in XP (especially found on - at least - at SP2). Installing the matching certificates will fixes that. So it's a Nokia (Ovi Suite) problem - they should have used certificates that supported XP. But it is easily fixed.

There's a clue that you have to add certificate manually from given URL (https://knowledge.verisign.com/support/code-signing-support/index?page=content&id=AR1739). Anyway that Symantec/VeriSign page is also bad - it should have given the proper installation instructions, and preferably an explanation also.

Hereby, I'd like to explain step-by-step how to fix this problem until Ovi Suite installed as well. First, prepare an internet connection to make the certificate files. Point to URL that given by the Nokia Ovi Suite alert from the browser.

As it can see, that there's 2 certificates code that you need to paste into separate files. Give it both different name with extension ".cer" and save it to anywhere inside your computer.

Next, right click the first certificate and choose Install Certificate.

A Certificate Import Wizard will show. Click Next.

Continue to automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate. Click Next.

Click Finish.

There's a window message tell you that the import operation is successfully. Repeat the same way on last certificate file. As well, the Nokia Ovi Suite installer should have given you an option to proceed with the install without checking the signing :)

Anyway, now Nokia Ovi Suite is ready to use. There's no need to worried about the functionality it self since I believe that Nokia developer have a great decision why they made this application instead of Nokia PC Suite. Hope that this article help you to fix about certificate error during Nokia Ovi Suite installation. See ya around!

Vehicle Self Diagnostic System

Did you know that Volkswagen introduces the first on-board computer system with scanning capability in their fuel injected Type 3 models in 1969? In IT world, this is what it called as embedded system. The purposed was to monitoring how the car engine reactions to fuel widely. But it was only for limited consumers such as repair technicians or official automotive garages.

Recently, the OBD system has been standardized and used for several automotive companies. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) plays an important role for this vehicle diagnostic interface. Let say, that this ECU is a processor in a CPU. ECU as logger and read any sensor that available on each vehicle. Some of major indicators are displayed in vehicle dashboard, such as speed, RPM state, fuel condition, engine temperature, etc. Nowadays, this self diagnostic system - as known as On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system - are open to end users - at least with kits and software. So what we can't see from dashboard, we can see from this OBD scanner - from it's connector that supplied from vehicle.

The OBD system now evolving to digital communication port and using Bluetooth stack to provide real-time data for various vehicle sub-system. So we can use various digital devices as OBD log reader, such as laptop, mobile phone, gadgets, etc. As much as OBD software reader available for some operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac OS), DashCommand for iOS Apple and Torque for Android based gadget, on this current article I reviewed about OBD software reader for Symbian and Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) based (legacy :) gadget. But first, provide an ELM 327 interface (with Bluetooth), a car with OBD II compliant (I used my 2010 Picanto Cosmo - KIA Morning) and Symbian or Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) - I particularly using Nokia E7 and HP iPAQ Pocket PC. Make sure that your ELM 327 is in good condition by plugged-in to OBD connector in your vehicle and do some pairing from your Symbian or Pocket PC gadget.

SYMBIAN
Unfortunately, I just found a single OBD software for Symbian. OBDScope is an OBD diagnostic software built for Symbian OS platform.

After a simple pairing via Bluetooth (mine with Nokia E7), you can found that OBDScope has been connected to OBD II interface.

It has quite complete 27 gauges available to use.

There are:

Calculated Load
Engine Coolant Temperature
Short Term Fuel Trim B1
Long Term Fuel Trim B1
Intake Manifold Pressure
Engine RPM
Vehicle Speed
Timing Advance
Intake Air Temperature
Absolute Throttle Position
O2 Sensor B1S1
O2 Sensor B1S2
Time Since Engine Start
Distance with MIL
Commanded Evaporative Purge
# Of Warm-ups Since DTCs Cleared
Distance Since DTCs Cleared
Catalyst Temperature B1S1
Absolute Load Value
Commanded Equivalence Ratio
Relative Throttle Position
Ambient Air Temperature
Momentary Fuel Economy
Fuel System
OBD Port Voltage
Location
GPS Speed

We can attach the gadget to any space available from dashboard and simply monitoring any gauges while the vehicle is running.

The most I like from OBDScope software is it CSV logging capability. So we can analyze later from Excel and define anything what's happened while we're on board.

WINDOWS MOBILE (POCKET PC)
There're some OBD software available on Windows Mobile market, but I found a simple software to use. It called as OBDKey. OBDKey also support for Windows OS and Palm legacy gadget.

There's no big difference between Torque, DashCommand, OBDScope and OBDKey. It's only a graphical interface to mention the gauges. DashView is an intuitive display for OBDKey, a similar display to Torque (in Android or iOS Apple based gadget)

CONCLUSION
Who does not know Torque? It's a big player in OBD software that runs on Android (or DashCommand in iOS). But, if we still have a legacy gadget and are not willing to buy Android or iPhone for OBD scanner software, why we don't try to optimize device we have? This above article is dedicated to you who have Nokia or Pocket PC device and want to make it as a OBD II scanner for your own vehicle. Thank's for reading and have a nice OBD monitoring!

My E7 Journey: PR1.0 - Anna - Belle

It's been a long time since I left my E7 - a great expensive gadget but sticked to old man named Symbian :). For some reason I switched to BlackBerry 9105 Pearl, a more handy smartphone and also 100% support for my business (BBM and Email). The E7 was the latest Nokia's communicator family with better build material and adopting slim unichrome body just like it's rival, the iPhone. A complete review about it, I wrote in this blog right on active link: http://paparadit.blogspot.com/2011/06/13-magnificent-things-of-magn-e7.html. Have a reading!

PR 1.0
The first birth of E7 implant the 5th Symbian generation, called PR 1.0. It's quite attractive OS but lack with lag after using it several times. A periodically reboot was needed to refresh the E7 brain.

On the net at that time, Nokia fans stumbled about some rumors talking about the next generation of Nokia OS. The options was MeeGo, Android, Windows Mobile or still with... Symbian. Based on Wiki page, Symbian OS actually built from Qt. Considering to the equivalent of hardware specs, Qt more "light-weight" than Java (Android based OS). That's the reason why Nokia still stick with Symbian rather than Android based OS. And nor to Microsoft WP, CMIIW.

On August 2011, finally Symbian Anna released officially by Nokia and it available to download via OTA.

It took about 67MB to update from PR1.0 to Anna. Thank's to my office net for providing me the best and fast internet link (at that time). The update process finished about 20 minutes and the previous 3rd party application installed before was still run.

Anna
The GUI experiences accelerated on Anna. The performance overall increased about 15-20%.

A physically different between the previous OS and Anna was the icon trademark - a shape rounded.

Therefore, lots of improvements in it including the browser, touch-screen speed reaction and more features.

But still, users experiences never lie. Nokia got some wonderful hardware, and still Nokia freak like me will say that Symbian in fact was so slow on run, buggy, also poor on innovations (R&D).

However, it's Nokia evolution time to rise the future of Symbian. Pure Qt as described earlier is designed to Anna or later (not to prior of S^3). Nokia plans to migrate it's OS architecture slowly since they have hundreds phone models (limited to various hardwares). And this is not an easy job to aligned all of it. Just for example, as Nokia promising that the update of Anna will be available at the end of 2011, but the fact is not what it said.

Anyway, at last, Belle update officially released in February 2012. As it shown on Software Update screen, but sorry to say that this update ONLY available via the last version of Windows PC Suite (not OTA).

Seems Nokia still have great homework to provide a multiplatform PC Suite, since I must to close my Mac & switch back to Windows to download the software.

With this latest suite, the detection of patch-update will displayed on screen.

So reasonable that Nokia ordering the update through PC while the phone plugged-in since it takes about 358MB of total Belle update.

The procedure is still the same; downloading, backing-up, install & restoring.

But it needs couple of minutes longer because Belle OS is defined as a major upgrade.

Belle
After it done, see... You'll never regret :)

The Belle has some great improvements, it totally different than Anna. Here I post a big key features after using Belle for couple days:
  1. One important point: Belle is fast! Moving around screen by screen is speedy, no lag, no delay.
  2. GUI's more similar to Android & up-to 6 home screen is available now. The screen is designed efficiently, the status bar holding the battery, signal bar & clock is minimized, giving a larger content area to display, just like Android.
  3. The battery life is improved. Still it's subjective to me :) But while I'm playing with this phone for hours, the battery remains is slower than Anna.

That's all. I think Nokia now is succeed with the Belle update. Now, it's time to prove your self! Have a smooth upgrade to Belle :)

Accessing Nokia OVI Mail from Outlook Express

Do you ever see those left banner right up on NOKIA Indonesia website? It’s a door prize offered to anyone who use free OVI email service. This time NOKIA would like to introduce this latest service and – anyway - the promotion looks great since the lottery will be drawing in every month from August to December 2009 with pretty fair rewards. Just check it out the requisite and follow the instruction to register and signing up to OVI. Once you have been registered to OVI, your ovi.com mail will be available.

Especially to whom has preferred email address, accessing OVI mail as your secondary mail from browser is unusual behavior, unless you have this as your primary email. But if you has multiple mail addresses and already manage it with mail client such as Outlook Express, checking out inbox will be much simpler. This article will explain on how to setting up OVI mail within Outlook Express so that you can retrieve and sending mail from it without need to open the mail from browser.

Create new account from Outlook Express and give with your name. Also fill with complete email address on address name column with youraccount@ovi.com.

Select IMAP (OVI doesn’t support POP3) and type imap.mail.ovi.com as incoming mail server. Whereas the Outgoing mail server is smtp.mail.ovi.com. Don’t forget to set the authentication for the outgoing mail server.

Note that both of incoming and outgoing mail server is using SSL port. So, make sure that you have to fill the port number with 993 for IMAP incoming and 465 for outgoing.

Ok, that’s it. It’s enough for the configuration & now is the time to make a trial. Go for icon Send and Receive All from Outlook Express & select the appropriate link for your OVI client name. If the synchronization is going well, make a turn to try sending a mail.

In my first attempt, the retrieval & sending test is success with above configuration. Please make a try & comment here.
